# When one thing runs long, move the rest

> One block ran twenty minutes long and the afternoon is off. Ripple shift slides it and everything after it down the 24-hour dial in one move, with undo.

The day rarely breaks all at once. It slips. One call runs twenty minutes long, and every block behind it is now sitting in the wrong hour. Nothing on the plan is *wrong*, exactly. It is all just late by the same twenty minutes.

On a list, you fix that by hand: edit the next thing, then the thing after it, then the thing after that, re-typing times down a column while the actual minutes tick away. Most people don't. They abandon the plan instead, because repairing it costs more than it's worth. The overrun doesn't just move the afternoon. It ends it.

A plan is a *sequence*, not a set of unrelated appointments. When the front of it slips, the back of it should slide too. That is the whole idea behind a ripple shift.

## Move one block, and everything after it comes along

Open any block's menu on the [24-hour dial](https://reassign.ai/blog/why-a-day-is-round) and choose **Shift this and later**, or just press **S**. Reassign takes that block and every block after it and moves them all down the day by the same amount. You set the delay once, and the rest of the day follows in a single move.

It reads the way the day actually behaved. The morning ran long, so the afternoon is thirty minutes later, all of it, still in the same order, still the same shape, just rotated further round the ring.

*Shift a block and everything after it slides down the dial together. One move, one undo.*

## Keep the anchors that can't move

Not everything in a day is flexible. The dentist at three is at three. The school pickup doesn't ripple.

So the shift isn't blind. Before it moves anything, it shows you every block that would slide and lets you uncheck the ones to leave alone. The flexible work rearranges itself around the fixed points, instead of shoving a hard appointment off its hour. You keep the anchors and move the rest.

You can start it from a block's menu, or from an empty stretch of the dial (**Shift all from here**) when you want to push everything from a given hour onward. Same move, different starting point.

## Nothing is committed until you say so

The reason people stop trusting a planner is that a bad edit is expensive to undo. Ripple shift treats the whole move as one action. Slide the day, look at it, and if it isn't right, one **Undo** puts every block back where it started. Not block by block. The whole ripple, reversed at once.

Repeating events are handled with the same care. When a shift moves an occurrence of a recurring block, only *that day's* copy forks and moves. Tomorrow's version keeps its original time. You're editing today, not rewriting the series.

## The day you can actually do

Planning tools tend to assume the plan holds. Real days don't work like that, and the gap between the day you drew and the day you're living is where most plans quietly die. The point of a ripple shift is to close that gap cheaply: when the morning overruns, you spend one move keeping the afternoon, instead of paying the full cost of re-planning it and deciding it isn't worth it.

It pairs naturally with [looking back on the day](https://reassign.ai/blog/the-other-half-of-planning). A plan you can repair is a plan you're willing to keep, and a plan you keep is one worth reflecting on later.

Ripple shift is live now on the desktop dial, free for everyone. [Selecting several blocks at once](https://reassign.ai/blog/copy-blocks-across-days) to edit or copy them across days is the [Pro](https://reassign.ai/pricing) companion to it. If you'd rather not touch it at all, you can [tell Claude](https://reassign.ai/mcp) to "push everything after lunch back half an hour" and watch the same slide land on the ring. Either way, the day bends instead of breaking. See what else is on the [roadmap](https://reassign.ai/roadmap), or [open the dial](https://reassign.app) and drag your first block.

## FAQ

### How do I move my whole schedule at once when I run late?

On the 24-hour dial, open a block's menu and choose "Shift this and later," or press S. Reassign moves that block and every block after it by the same amount, so the rest of the day slides down together instead of one drag at a time. You pick the delay, and one undo puts it all back.

### Can I move the rest of the day but keep some events fixed?

Yes. The shift dialog lists every block that would move and lets you uncheck the ones to leave in place, so a hard appointment or a school pickup stays where it is while everything flexible slides around it.

### Does a ripple shift change my recurring events forever?

No. When a shift moves an occurrence of a repeating event, only that day's occurrence forks and moves. The series keeps its original time on every other day.

### Is shifting the day a paid feature?

No. Ripple shift is free for everyone, on the desktop dial. Selecting several blocks at once to edit or copy them is part of Reassign Pro.
